Who are your lessons for?

Lonestar Catching works with catchers at every level — from youth players just learning the position (8U and up) all the way through high school varsity and college prospects. Every session is tailored to the player's age, physical development, and competitive goals.

Do I need any prior catching experience?

Not at all. Beginners are welcome. In fact, working with players early — before bad habits form — often produces the fastest results. Whether your athlete has never put on the gear or has been catching for years, we start with an assessment and build from there.

How do I book a first session?

The easiest way is to reach out through the Contact page or call/text (817) 721-3133. We'll talk through your goals, schedule a time that works, and get you on the calendar. First sessions typically include a full assessment so we can build a plan specific to your athlete.

Where are lessons held?

Lessons are held in the Prosper, TX area. We work with several local facilities and can accommodate both indoor and outdoor sessions depending on the time of year and availability. Exact location details are provided when you book.

What types of sessions do you offer?

We offer three formats: Private Lessons (one-on-one, most personalized), Small Group Sessions (2–4 players, great for teammates or friends), and Team Clinics (full team or organization, customized curriculum). Each format has different pricing — see the Lessons & Pricing page for full details.

How long is each session?

Private lessons are typically 60 minutes. Small group sessions run 60–90 minutes depending on group size. Team clinics are customized based on the program's needs and can range from 90 minutes to a full day.

Do you offer packages or discounts for multiple sessions?

Yes. Booking a package of sessions upfront is the best way to see consistent improvement and typically comes at a better rate than single sessions. Reach out directly to discuss package options that fit your schedule and budget.

What should my athlete bring to a session?

Accepted Answer

Full catching gear (helmet, chest protector, shin guards, mitt) and cleats or turf shoes. We provide the baseballs and any training aids needed. If your athlete doesn't have their own gear yet, let us know ahead of time and we'll work something out.

Do you offer team clinics for travel ball organizations?

Absolutely. Team clinics are a great way to develop multiple catchers at once and build a consistent system across your program. We've worked with 12U through 18U travel ball organizations across the DFW area. Contact us to discuss scheduling and pricing for your team.

Question 10

How quickly will my athlete see improvement?

Most players notice meaningful changes within the first 2–3 sessions, especially in receiving and footwork. Pop time and throwing mechanics take longer to fully develop — typically 4–8 weeks of consistent work. The biggest factor is what the athlete does between sessions: reps, film review, and intentional practice.

What skills do you focus on?

We cover the full position: receiving and framing, blocking, throwing mechanics, footwork and transfer speed, pop time development, pitch calling and game management, leadership and communication, and mental performance. Every session is built around what that specific athlete needs most.

Do you work on pop time specifically?

Accepted Answer

Yes — pop time is one of the most measurable and coachable metrics for catchers. We break it down into its components: transfer speed, footwork, arm path, and release point. Most athletes see meaningful improvement within a few weeks of focused work.

Will you communicate with my athlete's travel ball or high school coach?

We're happy to. Coordination between a private instructor and a team coach leads to better outcomes. If your athlete's coach wants to connect, share notes, or align on technique, we're open to that conversation.

Do you help with college recruiting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For high school catchers with college aspirations, we can help identify what college coaches look for at the next level, build a highlight package around your strengths, and make sure your mechanics and measurables are where they need to be. Several Lonestar Catching alumni are now playing at the collegiate level.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Life happens — we understand — but last-minute cancellations affect other athletes on the schedule. Repeated no-shows may result in forfeiture of pre-paid sessions.

What age is too young to start catching lessons?

We generally recommend starting no younger than 8 years old, though it depends on the individual child's maturity and interest level. At younger ages, the focus is on making it fun, building confidence, and establishing the right habits early — not drilling technique.

Do you train girls as well as boys?

Yes. The fundamentals of catching are the same regardless of gender. We've worked with female athletes in softball and baseball programs and the instruction is equally applicable.
